02.04.03 Twentythree, pixeled body.

Made by the canadian Babel, twentythree is an interactive linear Flash video featuring some digitized images and sequences taken from movies made in the year 1923. Even if somewhat similar to the film sequencing of ‘‘You are Late’.‘, by Barbara Lattanzi, this work abstracts the sequences, stylizing and layering them on top of one another until they’re turned into a bunch of pixels, but preserving the feeling of movement, lights and shadows. It’s a sort of impressionism mandated by the lack of antialiasing, suspended between the aesthetics of the first part of the twentieth century and the effects typical of electronic media. Moreover, twentythree features a long RealVideo sequence entitled ‘where is the sun’, where clips of a mute film are treated with the same algorithms of speed change, blurring and crude digitizing using warm colors which characterize all of this work.
