Alberto Novello a.k.a. JesterN & Flavio Zanuttini – Le Retour Des Oiseaux

Le Retour des Oiseaux is a project that brings together the musical wisdom of Alberto Novello, aka JesterN and Flavio Zanuttini. The piece is divided into five acts inspired by and dedicated to the French composer Olivier Messiaen. Messiaen, an organist and keen ornithologist, was also professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory, where his students included contemporary giants such as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis. Messiaen was so fascinated by birdsong he composed several works devoted exclusively to this topic. Here JesterN and Flavio Zanuttini elaborate on this practice, transforming the organic into the abstract, interweaving field recordings, improvisation and acousmatic ‘colour’. The project eventually evolved into a quadraphonic live audio-visual performance. Here the flugelhorn, played by Flavio Zanuttini and the sonic manipulations of Alberto Novello emerge alongside trills, fuzzy sequences, hyper-fragmented rhythmics and complex instrumental elaborations. Novello graduated with a degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of Trieste and is now based in the Netherlands. He is a member of the Sonology Electroacoustic Ensemble and part of the Federazione CEMAT for Electroacoustic Music in Italy and AIXIA, the Italian Federation for Artificial Intelligence. Just as a complex system consists of many interrelationships and “root causes”, these compositions are elusive when analysed from a linear perspective. Better to get lost in the sea of possible combinations, in the freedom that never disregards a sustainable structure, one that is very enjoyable and addictive.
