Italian composer and performer Alessandro Bosetti and Australian pianist Chris Abrahams have collaborated on A Heart That Responds From Schooling, a refined work that outlines hypnotic, abrasive melodies in a digitally domesticated setting of spectral atmospheres. Bordering on dark and disorientating, the seven tracks of this album unravel as oblique ballads, with slow tempi, instrumental structures and clearly defined narrative content. Bosetti intervenes vocally in the compositions, exploring free-form and minimalist repetitions: a large part of his work explores the musicality of language and the sonic qualities of verbal communication, making use of linguistic misunderstandings, translations and interviews as compositional tools. Here, melodies collide with an abstract, dreamy conceptualism. Chris Abrahams, who performs regular in experimental music circles in Australia and Europe is a good foil for Bosetti (now based in Marseille): the alternation and juxtaposition are perfect, balancing a vivid mixture that may feel purposefully muddled at times. The general impression is that of a sophisticated naiveté, a bit hipster and folk-mentaloid, casual and yet artfully constructed, with the evolutions of the piano and the romantic digressions combining to relate moments of fragility and intensity. This well-matched duo have released on Unsounds, an Amsterdam label created in 2001 by Andy Moor, Yannis Kyriakides and Isabelle Vigier – a trio not new to sound art projects, contemporary composition and experimental improvisation.
