09.10.03 Teletaxi, works sensitive to territory.

Urban territory, in the last years, is dealing with its data mapping, a thing which is contributing to redefine it and to create new in/visible structures according to coordinated dynamics. Wireless networks (cell phones and wi-fi), GPS systems, virtual communities, local chatrooms and every node describing them create zones and spaces with a temporary and rewritable architecture. Starting on October 10 and ending on 30, at the media art biennial Tranz <—> Tech in Toronto, an interesting experiment will be carried out. Teletaxi, presented by Year Zero One, is an exhibition where the term ‘itinerant’ is not abused at all, since the works will be shown on a screen inside a taxi cab, which can be booked by phone. The machine is equipped with a touch-screen interface and will show videos, animations and sounds depending on the signals received from a GPS receiver which influence the work shown based on the position of the taxi in the city. A normally passive audience is therefore subjected to different stimuli which encompass many different fields, from public intervention to psychogeography.
