Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, whose international version(wikipedia.org) was created in January 2001 by Larry Sanger and BenKovitz, with support by Jimbo Wales, who provided the necessaryservers. Wikipedia is based on a piece of free software, inspired bythe musings of Richard Stallman, of the Free Software Foundation, who,a long time ago, already imagined the possibility to build a freeencyclopedia, open and accessible by everybody. Wikipedia, initially apart of the Nupedia project, offers its visitors something like 70,000articles released under the GNU Free Documentation License. Thecontributions, therefore, can be modified and/or distributed at will. The only condition for the authors is to write original texts, or texts copied by other public domain resources: no copyright-infringing material is allowed. The subjects of the articles range from philosophy to mathematics, from applied arts to sciences, from social sciences to general culture. There’s also an italian version of Wikipedia: it.wiki reached 2,000 articles in March and it’s trying to reach 5,000 by the end of spring. Anybody can create an article, following the same sharing spirit the project was born from. There’s also a mailing list to discuss the organizational aspects of Wikipedia: Intlwiki-L.
