Laura Carton is an artist from New York particularly talented in the tecniques of photo retouching with Photoshop. Obsessed with the incredible quantity of pornographic images one can find on the Net, she developed her own poetics which consists of removing the bodies from the photos, leaving the setting intact. The artist states that, by doing such a thing, any user can rewrite the narration, as it happens in her Multiple Insertions, where such a setting can be populated at will with perversions selectable from the frame of the image. It’s the physical presence being recreated into the deconstructed pictures by the user’s own imagination. The manager of her art gallery compares her works to the photos depicting the scene of a murder, where, in the same way, the looker ‘feels’ the spirit which hovers in the image, an almost ‘physical’ presence. Her works are named after the websites the pictures were taken from and the most paradoxical ‘debodification’, that of pornographic pictures downloaded from the Net, where the triumph of the bodies is represented through images transiently encoded as data packets, here undergoes its ultimate decomposition. The bodies portrayed within electronic pictures, already devoided of their materiality, raise themselves even more above this status to become pure mental energy of imagination.
