06/06/02 Taiwan, the national plan for the free software.
In Taiwan (Republic of China), the National Supercomputer Center is trying to get the government to approve a national plan for the development and use of free software, the 'National Open Source Plan', which would start in 2003 and would remain for two years. The plan was considered in part because of the expensive licenses claims from Microsoft (which according to a first calculation would save € 300 billion to the local community), and in part to develop the level of software production in the nation. The data in the possession of the government are 1,230,000 of computers in schools and offices, most of which run on Windows and Office. The plan calls for the completion of a localized environment, the 'Chinese Open Source Software Environment' for all the needs of the Taiwanese community, as well as resources for training and teaching deployed in six training centers that will feed 120,000 users greeted by 9,600 teachers who will follow them even after the training in their respective projects developed.
