Bill Koulingas’ Berlin-based PAN Records focus on electronic, experimental and sound art, promoting a rather harsh, abstract, conceptual and techno-oriented catalogue. We are in the borderland between clubbing culture and a more sophisticated investigative approach, a form of techno that does not mind more uncompromising, noisy and contemporary ways. This release by James Hoff – an artist, curator, researcher and sound manipulator, who also runs a publishing house in New York – is inspired by a genuine interest in computer viruses. The artist has employed virus-like software specifically to “infect” 808 beats and samples, which have been used in all eight compositions presented. “Viruses, like art, need a host”, says Hoff, “preferably a popular one”. These treatments have not been constructed for normative tastes: everything here remains unpredictable. In the midst of many releases that exist at the crossroads this well-produced effort stands out for its harsh, tremulous, suspenseful atmospheres that encourage active listening. The attached videos are also very interesting: infused by geometric envelopes and glitches, Hoff’s new media skills impose themselves in a formally impeccable manner that is over-flowingly rhythmic and dynamic.
