CD – FFSpace

Body in White, the latest release from 14Circles, immediately stands out from our pile of new tracks to be reviewed thanks to its fancy packaging: the half plexiglass, half hardbound CD features striking artwork by V4W.ENKO. Hiding behind the moniker “14Circles” is Anton Holota, a Ukrainian artist now based in Germany. His back catalogue includes albums released under the name COTF that range from dub-techno to more experimental work. Holota has performed at many festivals throughout Europe. Through the nine very brief tracks of this release – less than twenty minutes in total – Holota has found an ideal coexistence between analogue and digital sounds, creating dark, seductive rhythms that balance repetitive electronic patterns and more unusual figures. His blending of styles would make a strong impression on certain classy dancefloors, though there is a strong conceptual element at play here too. Body in White refers to part of the production process in the automotive industry: the welding together of pieces to create a rough skeleton of a car. Here glitchy elaborations meet IDM, with rarefied scans and nervous jumps cut together to hint at various metropolitan contexts, revealing a strong musical knowledge and familiarity with many different styles. hinting at different metropolitan contexts that already include several attitudes and a strong musical knowledge.
