Prof. Frank Popper used to be at cutting edge of art and technology studies with its celebrated “Art of the Electronic Age” book published just before the internet public advent. In the present war of definitions (digital art, electronic art, new media art) his “virtual art” concept embraces artworks from the beginning of 20th century till now, with a peculiar virtue in aesthetic descriptions. Any scholar would found the chapters chronicling 70s and 80s periods a very useful resource and it’s also worth to note the author’s effort to establish a logic connection along the whole timeline considered, involving the artists and their personal visions. In fact this book is also serving another duty: promoting the integration of electronic art in the broader contemporary art field, that indeed seems to be the main reason behind the recent proliferation of historical books about “new media art”. Popper distinguished humanistic approach (his credo is that “a technology is humanized by art”) is the thin red line that crosses the load of data hosted in the text. Popper believes that “interactivity” is the key, unfolding the potential of meaningful relationships that can be mediated by art using technologies.
