The new online project commissioned by the Dia Center for the Arts in New York is called Tom Thumb: Notes Towards A Case History , and refers to the famous tale of Tom Thumb (Tom Thumb, in fact). The author is Jeanne Dunning, who in his works often came from familiar objects and seemingly innocent and then turn them into beautiful and unfamiliar artifacts. In his first work on the web, the artist focuses on some particular elements of the story, accompanied by an eccentric historical research, which draws on sources dating back to the fifteenth century, for a re-reading of the text with idiosyncratic bizarre episodes in which the protagonist is regurgitated by a giant, eaten and defecated by a cow and prevented in an attempt to rape the queen. The images are used as a rebus, or substitute in the words, and they are also vintage, and some key terms are replaced by short animations that link to other occurrences of the same terms in other pages. The work also addresses an investigation on the outside and on the inside of the body, through which Tom Thumb moves in different events, which reports to various psychoanalytic theories and stages of development (oral, anal and genital), to the Oedipus complex . And this body size, visceral taken out of context of fairy tales destabilizes the user, a bit 'like all manifestations of the flesh fruite through the bright light of the screen brighter.
