05/11/02 The founder of Lotus opens the Open Source Applications Foundation.
Mitch Kapor, one of the pioneers of the software industry (founder of Lotus Development Corp.9) funded in San Francisco, the Open Source Applications Foundation with a $ 5 million paid entirely from his personal funds. The project has joined as a full-time volunteer Andy Hertzfeld, a leader of the original Apple Macintosh development team. Their first project is a personal information manager, code-named Chandler, which combines functionality of email and calendar with the ability to share files between multiple users. By the end of 2003, the product should be ready for free download, both in the finished version, and in that of the source code. The only economic returns that the foundation will be those companies who want to produce commercial products based on code released for free. Following the model also LInux this initiative based on sharing and mutual improvement the opportunity to earn money by making available its fully a work of genius.
