The OpenNet Initiative: understanding and combating censorship on the Net

The activity of the OpenNet Initiative (ONI), comes from the reflection on the relationship between censorship, technology and strength. The project was born in the Citizen Lab, an interdisciplinary laboratory of the Munk Centre for International Studies, at the University of Toronto, Canada, and thanks to the Cambridge Programme for Security in International Society, university of Cambridge, UK. Assuming that the Net often occur episodes of censorship and that there is a periodic check on certain topics and reality, especially belonging to the universe hacktivist, the ONI was established to study these forms of control, analyzing the systems used and the filters may monitoring and control of information traveling the Network Under the project, the OpenNet Initiative, gave birth to a "clearinghouse", which stores, currency, and head technology tools "hacktivists", which are locally produced and distributed through Internet. Their ethics is based on the observation that Internet censorship restricts the ability of development and growth of our company, resulting in the arrest of the free flow of information. Among the projects developed, The Internet Censorship Explorer (ICE) is a software that allows you to see in real time how widespread censorship for certain URLs, for users whose access is blocked. ICE provides access to detrminate URL, after the compilation of a query form by the user, using proxy servers specific to the country in question.
