Napster announced that it is to adopt a system of 'acoustic fingerprinting', which is unique recognition based on the acoustic characteristics of the tracks. The technology in question was developed by relatable , and is defined TRM. Its operation is described as the extraction of a 'large number of acoustic characteristics', which creates a kind of unique identifier, then compared with those present in its database.
