I said that once some man had been calling me a lot wanting to give me one, but that I’d never called him back or something, and then the kid looked up and said, ‘Yeah, that was me. I’m Steve Jobs.’ And he looked so young, like a college guy. And he told me that he would still send me one now. And then he gave me a lesson on drawing with it. It only comes in black and white now, but they’ll make it soon in color…I felt so old and out of it with this young whiz guy right there who helped invent it.”

In the assumptions of generative music is to generate music that does not repeat until after dozens if not hundreds of years. Longplayer is an attempt to exaggerate this approach, while keeping it in even noticeable by human consciousness, The work in fact physically displaced in a former lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London, can be heard streaming on the web and began January 1, 2000 and ends on December 31, 2999 predictably. The work has a strong concept behind it, namely that of time inconceivable beyond human existence and a key element of the musical structure. The time of the generative music gets out of hand and hovers, as in this case, towards the distant future.
