Don Gurnett is a physicist at the University of Iowa who is helping the Kronos Quartet to build a comprehensive performance of sound recordings obtained by the waves that have passed through space probes such as Voyager, Galileo and Cassini, in the composition in ten movements called 'Sun Rings', in collaboration with Terry Riley. The latter was the one who selected the pattern for melodies, such as those derived from the evolution of the Galileo spacecraft around Ganymede. The work was commissioned by the NASA art program, and several samples of sounds converted from instruments that detect plasma waves can be heard in a video spectrograph on the site of JPL .
