The public performances of Ansuman Biswas are 'session' of meditation, but far from being dark and monotonous, they become spectacular thanks to a technological device that attempts to view them. The artist of Bengali origin and a Londoner by adoption, in fact, in 'Self / Portrait' assumes the lotus position for six hours, using an electrocardiograph homebuilt interfaced with a laptop and a video camera, along with a real-time display of sotware that tries to reproduce its internal processes. The type of meditation practiced is called 'Vipassana' and uses the self-observation to eliminate the 'noise' of everyday life. As the meditation progresses, an image of the artist is projected behind him, and although it remains almost motionless for a while 'time, sometimes vibrates violently, bringing the chaotic changes in physical rhythms in progress.
