In a couple of days present mp3PRO Thomson Multimedia, a new version of the famous standard that achieves the same sound quality with half the bitrate, and thus drastically reducing file sizes to about half. Already at 80Kbit the result is indistinguishable from that of a CD. All this thanks to the 'spectral band replication', an algorithm that lets you include high frequencies that were discarded by the previous encoder to a lower bit rate. For example the old encoder cut all frequencies above 10Khz at a bit rate of 64Kbit. Despite the files remain backward compatible to the playability is necessary to have a new encoder (pictured Nomad II, who has one) to take advantage of new features. Mp3PRO was developed by Coding Technologies, a company in Stockholm, and will be dismissed from Thomson Multimedia. A demo version of the encoder will be available for download on the site of the RCA from 14 June.
